Water and its management is the biggest challenge that India faces today. Nearly 600 million people, half of the country’s population, is facing high to extreme water stress. About 70 per cent of the water is contaminated. And by 2030, India’s demand for water is likely to become double of the available water supply.
The effect of this scenario could be adverse on India’s economy, with some experts forecasting a massive 6 per cent loss in the country’s GDP because of the same. Needless to say, major interventions are needed immediately to make the use of water sustainable, efficient and guided by a deeper understanding of how our water resources can effectively be managed for future generations.
